The general guideline for LASIK surgery is that you NEED to be 18, however that does not guarantee you as an instant candidate for the surgery. Most operating physicians request that your vision has been stable for at least one year. If your vision is still changing, it can make for poor results post-operatively. Also, astigmatism does not instantly disqualify you for the surgery. It’s all dependent on the level of astigmatism correction you would need.
There have been many advancements made to the world of laser vision correction over the last few years which help many more patients become candidates. There are different lasers (example: Bausch & Lomb, Alcon LadarVision, VISX) and procedures (LASIK, PRK, or Intralase) that can be used to fit a wider range of needs. The health of your eyes, medication you’re currently taking, and the thickness of your corneas can contribute to the fact of candidacy as well. The only way to find out is to schedule an appointment with a laser vision correction company for a consultation. Most of the time, the consultation is free and can fully educate you on what you need to know.
Please, do research on any practice you are considering for your surgery. Just remember, you only have 2 eyes and it’s your responsibility to take the best care of them that you possibly can! Anything that sounds ‘too good to be true’ probably is so keep your eyes wide open for scams. Make sure to use your best judgment!
The cost of laser vision correction surgery can be a bit on the costly side, but some places offer in-house financing or there is a medical credit company called Care Credit which can finance your procedure (a lot of times with no interest for the first year or so).. look into your options!
Make sure to be an educated patient.
Here are a couple of links to reputable companies who do the surgery. They aren’t located everywhere though and unfortunately, I don’t know where you’re from.. but, I’m sure you can find what you need through their websites.
