Can Gas Permeable Contact Lenses Harm The Cornea?

I’ve worn them for almost 20 years and love them.
However, I recently went to get my eyes checked and was told that these type of lenses are almost “obsolete” and were harming my cornea. The optometrist is now switching me over to the disposable contact lenses.
The gas permeable lenses were great for correcting my astigmatism. Plus, I didn’t have to buy new ones every few months. I’ve done some internet research and couldn’t find anything about this.
Has anyone else been told anything negative about gas permeable contact lenses?
(please…. no website info….just answers from experienced contact lenses wearers….thanks!)

I’ve been wearing them for 30 years now. And actually my eye doctor told me they were great lenses, better for the eyes than the soft ones, but that most people don’t want to have to go through the “adjustment” period. They take a little longer to get used to I suppose, but they are just plain better!!! You don’t ever have to worry about them drying out, or ripping, and they last a really long time!! Trust me, eye doctors are trained to get people on disposables because they make soooo much more money on them! Get another opinion from a different doctor. But remember, all doctors are trained, its a money operation, and they might seriously be brainwashed. I’ve had my eyes checked MANY times, and they have all said that my contact lenses were quite superior to the soft , disposable ones.
