Confused On How To Read My Contact Lens Prescription?

October 1, 2009 by admin
Filed under FAQ on advance for astigmatism

My eye doctor wrote +175 for the sphere of my right eye. Is it really +175 or actually +1.75? I am trying to order contact lenses online and i realized the highest power i can select for contact lenses is +9.00
So i cant be really 175 right?
I am currently a contact lens wearer. I am trying to get color contacts but alot of opticians will not get it for me because they keep saying how i have a “rare” prescription.. I suffer from astigmatism and hyperopia. and how my pupils are bigger then normal people.. -____-”

It should be +1.75. Some doctors do not put the decimal point in when they write prescriptions.
I feel you on the colored contacts problem. I have a rare contact lens prescription too.
    Right eye – no correction
    left eye PL -1.25 x 60
My glasses are almost the same except I am at -1.5 this was the closest contact prescription I could get without overcorrecting. I looked into getting freshlook and they do not even offer it with the axis I have. I also have the issue of matching the color of a toric lens with the one I would need with no prescription. My right eye has also never wore a contact lens so I am not sure how that will go either.
I know you can order custom made colored torics, but they are really pricy. Here are some I looked at but decided they were way too expensive.
    Good Luck!http://www.discountcontactlenses.com/dis…

It is 1.75. I am positive. 15 is even an extremely high prescription.
You are probably having issues with the colour contacts because of the shape of your eye, not the prescription. Depending on how much astigmatism you have, or any other factors making your eyes a different ahpe, is making the colour contacts hard to get. Its probably better to have your coloured contacts custom-made, as astigmatism can make your eyes very unique shapes.

I am very sure that your doctor meant to write +1.75, there is no such thing as +175 — blind maybe? You know how doctors’ handwritings are, it’s like chicken-scratch.
As for color contacts, you can try getting them colored, but I agree with most opticians. Since you have a rare prescription, you may not be able to see as well with the colored contacts. But then again, if you really want to try go ahead :)
