Contacts/glasses Question-why Do I Have To Get Used To Glasses First?

Hi –
I got glasses recently (I’m 13) cuz I have 20/100 in every eye and slight astigmatism. However, I look like a nerd anyway and my friends told me to get contacts NOW cuz you look so nerdy. SO NERDY like really nerdy. My question-I’m responsible, and I’m willing to take care of contacts for as long as it takes/I won’t break them. I don’t have any headaches with glasses. Why are my parents telling me to wear glasses for a while first?

Because that’s what parents do. They are concerned about you wearing contacts because they aren’t really familiar with them and don’t know much about them. They want what is best for you and fear that you won’t do well with contacts. Not very logical but that’s what parents do. So, you just need to understand this and play the game. This means wear your glasses well and take care of them well. When they see you have handled this responsibility, they will be less fearful of you wearing contacts. So, let them act like parents. And you act like the good child. With a little patience and responsibility you will eventually probably get to wear contacts. Hang in there.
You can see better with glasses than contacts. Contacts prescriptions are not always 100 percent. Contacts can cause irritation and dirt can get stuck in your eye. Your eyes will get bloodshot. They take a while to figure out how to put them in. I wear both. I prefer glasses any day. I can put them on and be ready to go somewhere. They are much better for your eyes than contacts. I think your parents already know that so that is why they are telling you to get use to your glasses.
Yagman is correct, but I doubt it is the answer you want to hear. I was prescribed eyeglasses as a teen and hated wearing them. I understand where you are coming from on that. Wear your eyeglasses when you need them and take care of them. It does not matter what your friends think. It does matter that you will be able to see better.
I suggest that you prove by your actions that are responsible enough to wear contacts. You can do your homework and chores before your parents ask you to as a start.
I also suggest that you check out Acuvue’s website for some helpful tips for speaking with your parents on the subject.http://www.acuvue.com/thinking-whocanwea…http://www.acuvue.com/thinking-whocanwea…

Only thing to do is ask them. We don’t know what they are thinking.
