Do Tired Eyes Worsen Astigmatism?

September 30, 2009 by admin
Filed under FAQ on advance for astigmatism

I have very mild astigmatism, mild to the point where it’s borderline to not having it at all. However, recently I’ve noticed a slight worsening of my condition. I’m used to hardly ever noticing the symptoms, but now when it’s late at night I notice my astigmatism when I’m reading text on my computer screen.
Does anyone know if it’s just because I’ve had a long day and my eyes are tired and want rest? Any personal experiences would be appreciated :)

Astigmatism is normal as people age. Astigmatism happens when the eyeball loses its roundness and vision starts to become hazy. Astigmatism can also be caused by years of stress and strain on the eyes.
The eye is surrounded by tiny muscles that help the eye ball elongate and contract. Years of tension, can weaken these muscles and cause problems when the eyes need to change shape.
When you feel tense, there are some activities you can do, and they only take a few minutes. The first thing to do is relax. Stop what you are doing and take a quick break. You don’t have to leave your desk or the area you are working in. Simply move your eyes around.
Look away from the screen or the papers in front of you; focus on objects far away and give your eyes a chance to move from near to far.

The later in the day the more noticeable uncorrected astigmatism can be, ESPECIALLY when you are at the computer, because we have a tendency to blink less while looking at a computer screen. Get a lens with a good anti-reflective treatment to wear while working at the computer to alleviate the strain. If you don’t wear prescription, Gunnar Optiks makes a great over the counter computer vision eyeglass line with an anti-reflective treatment and slight yellow tint that alleviates the strain.
