Does Wearing Glasses At A Young Age Make Your Eye Sight Worse?

December 23, 2009 by admin
Filed under FAQ on advance for astigmatism

My 8 year old daughter had an eye exam and was told she needs glasses. (astigmatism in right eye vision was 20/40? i think. left eye was 20/20 no astigmatism) She has never complained about not seeing or anything like that. I have been told by other people that wear glasses since they were children that wearing the glasses will make her get a stronger prescription every year. So by the time she is an adult she will be on a very strong prescription.
Sorry if it sounds complicated but if you know anything about this please comment. Thanks!

Your daughters’ vision will continue to change whether she wears glasses or not. Every part of her body will continue to grow, hair, nose, fingers, etc.
Kids used to be told that if they wore their glasses, they would not need them when they grew up. It was usually just a trick.
Wearing glasses will help to lessen the work of the focusing muscles. People with normal vision have normally shaped lenses in their eyes. They do no use their eye muscles for distance. People who are nearsighted, farsighted, or astigmatic have defects in the shape of their eye lenses. With astigmatism the muscles try to reshape the lens to focus. That is work.

Wearing glasses does not make your vision worse, changes happen naturally over time.
If one eye is much worse than the other it is very important that the child wears the glasses, as sometimes the brain ignores the less clear eye, and it can become “lazy”, and the level of vision in that eye can become irreversibly reduced.
If a child has always has a vision error, they will not complain as they do not realise that their vision should be better!

i suggest that dont make her wear eye glasses at that age because her eye sight will increase every year like me. Perhaps its only astigmatism its mean the eyefocus or the light focus that your eye receive in object has a problem. it will not affect the visual vision of your daughter she can still see a crystal clear vision. im sure the doctor explain that to you astigmatism. hope it helps >.< t.c.

I have an astigmatism as well and the problem is that the astigmatism will cause her sight to decrease with age. Usually it isn’t fast or anything so it should be ok. I started out with about 20/40 when I was 12 and 7 years later it really has only changed slightly.

nope! it is better to wear rather than make it worsen. in childhood if a child has problem, they may acceptable to use. but i think if your daughter diagnosed like you said, i comment that your daughter must use eyeglass. consult first to the eye specialist first.

i think with or without glasses, most people’s eyesight worsens over time. She probably doesnt realize it. i would say you dont have to get her glasses quite yet but if it gets worse after a year then you should.

I really hope my answer is not too confusing. I apologize I tend to get a little verbose sometimes.
This really depends on what the eyeglasses are prescribed for in children. If the child is moderately farsighted (trouble seeing near objects caused by a shorter than normal eye) and prescribed eyeglasses at a young age, then there is a possibility that the eyes will grow out of the farsightedness or that it will lessen.
If the child is nearsightedness (trouble seeing distance objects caused by a longer than normal eye) then vision may get worse as the child grows because the eye grows as the child does.
Astigmatism can occur by itself or in addition to nearsightedness and farsightedness and can get better or worse as the child grows. There is no way to really know.
Eyeglasses are also prescribed to children to treat strabismus and amblyopia, if this is the case with your daughter. I suggest getting the eyeglasses, but it is unlikely this is the case considering she is 8 years old. I suggest that you ask her doctor about this one just in case.
I have moderate astigmatism in my left eye and my right eye is close to normal. I was prescribed eyeglasses at around 14 years to correct the astigmatism in my left eye. My situation was similar to your daughter’s and I know my left eye probably needed eyeglasses before then. I really disliked wearing eyeglasses so I only wore them a few times, then decided they were not really necessary since my right eye could compensate for the left eye and did so for many years.
I started to get nasty headaches and double vision while driving when I was about 30 years and at that point, I decided I probably should start correcting my vision and have done so ever since. I typically wear a contact lens in my left eye. The RX in my left eye did get a little worse over time, but I think that would have happened whether I wore eyeglasses or not.
If your daughter experiences problems as a result of her vision, then get her the eyeglasses and tell her to wear them when she needs to.
    I hope this helps :)

Other thing you gotta think about is that she has NOTHING to compare to how her vision could be, when I was a kid I sat close to the tv every day to see the screen my mom thought I was being stubborn till they screened me for school and said “she needs glasses” because I asked them to make the pictures on my development test bigger cuz I couldn’t see from where I stood or I tried to get up and move closer or something and I said I needed to move closer to see it. It was amazing to be able to see much more clearly. I have a strong prescription now as an adult (I need my glasses or contacts at all times) but I’m pretty sure I would either way as a kid they always had so many difficulties figuring out my prescription because they could only get it so close my vision was so difficult and also rapidly changing, this lady who checked my eyes I think she was getting kind of frustrated when I told her I couldn’t even see the big letter without my glasses on when I got them checked, but all I see are fuzzy shapes and colors when I don’t wear my glasses. I also wore bifocals as a child then in about jr high I was told I grew out of them and no longer needed the bifocal part. So I would recommend getting her glasses if she needs stronger prescriptions she probably would have inevitably and if she grows out of them she grows out of them. If she hates glasses when shes older she can always consider contacts or corrective surgery. And she will probably do better in school if she can see better and enjoy the world arround her more.
