I Am Trying To Order Glasses Online As Well And The Rx That My Doctor Sent To Me Says: R -5.50 -25 X 83?

How do I read this? The clearly-contacts site is asking for the SPH which is -5.50 but then it is asking for the CYL which from what I understand is the astigmatism correction but it looks like my doctor is saying it is -25?? It only goes up to -3.75…..Then it also asks for a PD – is that the distance between my eyes??

The astigmatism correction is -0.25 not -25. The pd is the interpupillary distance…ie the distance between the centers of the pupil of each eye. Any optical can measure this for you and should give it to you without much complaint. I’d make sure this is accurate because with your Rx, you’ll get a prismatic effect from the lenses (which can cause headaches and eye strain) if they are not centered to your pupil. As for contact lenses, both previous posts are incorrect with regards to what your Rx would be. I’m not going to tell you what I would prescribe based on what you’ve stated, because contact lenses are a medical device that needs to be evaluated on your eye to ensure not only the Rx is correct, but also that the fit on your eye is correct. Contact lens prescriptions have not only the power, but a base curve which determines how tightly a lens fits upon the eye. A poor fitting lens can cause complications. If you have had a contact lens fit and your Rx if finalized, the doc is required by law to release it to you at no charge.
The pd is the distance between your eyes(pupillary distance) The cyl is the astigmatism and its -.25 . That’s least you can have. As for your contacts that -.25 will be ignored anyway. Your contact rx will be a -5.50. (most likely) if you had a cyl of -.50 they might take half and add that to your sphere and you would wear a -5.75 in contacts. it just compensates for the cyl. correction, but it doesent really give you as clear as correction as it would through your glasses, but when the cyl is -.25 or -.50 you don’t notice , but when its more you notice and some people will get contacts for astigmatism.
if this RX belongs to glasses the reading should be SPH -5.50 CYL -0.25 AXIS 83
P.D. means pupil distance
for buying contact lenses you should order -5.00 as contact lenses it has water contained and direct contact with your eye corneal so we had to reduce the RX prescription reduce by 10%or lower and do you know which base curve of contact lens suit your eye better.
