I Had Astigmatism In Both Eyes. Now, I Don’t. Is That Possible?

I have had astigmatism in both eyes for years. It has been 5 years since I had an eye exam and I had one today. The eye doctor told me that my right eye doesn’t have astigmatism anymore but my left eye still does. He said sometimes it can change as you get older and time goes on. That sounds odd to me. Is this possible?

yes, astigmatism can change over time.
most astigmatism is corneal, or due to a cornea that is not spherical. barring eye disease, that type of astigmatism usually doesnt change much over time.
but some astigmatism is lenticular, meaning due to the shape of the internal crystalline lens. the shape of the crystalline lens can change over time and therefore can cause small changes in the amount of astigmatism you have. usually not a lot of change either way.
the other possibility is that prescribing habits vary VASTLY by doctor. so who is prescribed astigmatism and who is not, and how much astigmatism and in what orientation…some of those things are up for interpretation and will not be the same from one doctor to another or even from one visit to another.

IDK I have astigmatism. Are you a younger person? Maybe it can change if you’re like 25 or less.

It sure is. Happend to me at my last visit, which is good because now I don’t have to have those expensive contacts. Anyways, especially if you are younger, your eyes change shape. This is the reason as you age (as in adult to elder) the eyesight usually gets worse. This is also why some people who wore glasses as kids don’t even need them as adults.
