I was having an exam for a contact lens fitting, and the dr. said disposable lenses were available for people with severe astigmatism now. But, he said that 4 “diopeters” were the highest prescription available for disposable. I have 8 in my right eye, and 6 in my left eye which he said was very bad. He seemed to make a big deal about it. Now, I’m worried. I’ve always had eye problems, but he made it sound worse than I thought it was. He also said I may have Keratoconis which I know is a corneal eye disease. Is blindness likely as I grow older. Please advise

Astigmatism of 6D (diopters – you were close) or greater is considered severe. Did your doctor discuss the rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses with you, as an alternative to the disposables?
Your best course of action is to discuss this with your eye care professional, and determine if you really -do- have keratoconus. If so, there are many resources for learning about the condition, and keeping informed about available treatments. You could start at http://www.nkcf.org/ , the National Keratoconus Foundation website. Read the FAQ’s, join a support group.. Hopefully, being more informed will ease your mind a little.
