A second opinion can never hurt. Astigmatism in general is pretty common, but not necessarily in 6-year olds. Astigmatism sounds like a terrible thing, but it really isn’t. It’s just that your son needs 2 different prescriptions in one eye. It’s absolutely correctable with glasses or contacts.
Other people have made comments about other kids teasing your son about his glasses. If he likes being able to see with them, is excited to wear them, and wears them confidently, he will have much less trouble with the other kids. Also, 6 is a little young to be considering contacts. As soon as you and he feel he is old enough to handle the responsibility of caring for contacts (and provided your eye doctor says he’s a good candidate), contacts may be an option.
You’re husband is correct in wanting a second opinion. Any qualified opthomologist will be able to answer this question better than the general public. Good luck to you–and your son is indeed fortuate for having caring parents.
Astigmatism is fairly common, but I agree with your husband wanting a second opinion…my sister was prescribed glasses for the very same thing at that age, but when examined by a different doctor, found out it was a misdiagnosis…she is now 21 and still doesn’t need glasses for anything!
Incidentally, if it IS astigmatism, glasses can correct the problem!
I have an astigamatism in both of my eyes and I had to wear glasses. I still do were glasses, but glasses won’t fix an astigamatism. If you husband is worried about him possibly being picked on because he wears glasses, there is always contact leneses, which I have thoose too. (And now they have lasik eye surgery. I hear it is totally painless). Contact lenses are cheaper now and you can but special ones made for people who have astigamatisms. But a second opion won’t hurt anything if thats what he wants. Just don’t wait forever, because the more difficult it is for you child to see, the more he will strain his eyes to see things, and the worse his eyes will get.
I would get a 2nd opinion also. My husband was the same way, when our daughter had to get glasses. He was more worried about the kids making fun of her. I would rather kids tease her, than her go blind. Either way, kids are mean and comments will be made, so be prepared. She has been wearing glasses since she was 3 and is now 6. Just tell him how handsome he looks at every chance when he has them on…..I am so used to my daughters that I don’t even realize she has them on.
