New To Wearing Contacts – Is This Normal?

December 9, 2009 by admin

I’ve never worn contacts until this last Sat. I’d gotten new glasses with the same prescription as the contacts. Things with the glasses are clear as a bell. With the contacts, from the second I put them on, things go in and out of being blurry. Things I could read with my glasses become hard to read or even unreadable with my contacts. It’s better than not having anything on, but is that normal? It is day three. Up to 6 hours. I do have astigmatisms in both eyes. Is this difference common for new wearers? Thanks!

No the problems that you have are not normal and certainly not common. Moreover as far as I know when you have astigmatism the prescription for contacts is different from the one for glasses, also when you have high myopia(nearsightedness) or hypermetropia (farsightedness) again the prescription has to be different. Go to an optometrist or even better visit an ophthalmologist, your eyes are precious and your vision affects your mood and if you continue to wear not the right lenses for you, soon you will have headaches…

Well two things seem to stand out. You have an astigmatism and your vision goes in and out of focus. If your not wearing toric or RGP contact lenses your vision is definitely going to be less clear than with your glasses. Two things might be causing things to go in and out of focus. One might be that your eyes are adjusting to the contacts and are producing more tears as a response against the foreign object in your eye. Two, If you wear soft lenses when you blink your contacts can bend causing your vision to be temporarily blurry. Your might eventually adjust to it or they might not depending on what is causing your blurry vision. That is why you probably want to visit your doctor to see if your lens was a good fit and see if there aren’t any other problems. Your situation isn’t really normal but it isn’t extremely unusual for new contact lens wearers.

You must have really bad astigmatism and contacts can’t correct that. With astigmatism, the eye is shaped slightly like a football instead of an orb and therefore it has trouble focusing. Glasses can correct it however. I have the same problem from time to time with my right eye. Also, if your contact is inside out your vision will be REALLY messed up and uncomfortable. The way I can tell if my contact is right side out is it bounces right back when I fold it in half like a taco. Keep them clean, too, because you can get build-up on them which will cause blurriness.

No its not normal. At least that didn’t happen to me. Maybe they got your prescription wrong. I would go back to the doc.
