Can Anyone Tell Me What My Glasses Prescription Means?

I went to the optician today and I need to get some glasses. I have some basic knowledge about ophthalmology as I’m about to be a doctor, so I know the basics about how light focuses on the eye etc etc. And I understand the basic concept of astigmatism and how the eye is shaped more lke a rugby ball than a football….
Anyway, my prescription from the optician is:
R: SPH -1.00 CYL -0.50 Axis 115
L: SPH -1.25 CYL – 0.50 Axis 90
I understand that it shows myopia in both eyes, left slightly worse than right, but what do the other numbers mean? It’s something to do with the degree of astigmatism, but what do they actually show? And what does that mean in terms of my eyes?
Just interested!!!

I have astigmatism in my right eye, and on the package that my toric contact lens came in, it says -0.00 -3.75 x015.
What is my exact prescription? A girl I know says her prescription is -8. How can it be one number when mine is three?
Also, how bad is my astigmatism?
Thanks. (:
Contact Lens Prescription 0 Sph Means No Correction?

I have astigmatism and recently ordered contact lenses with an sph of +1.00. They do not work at all. I looked at my old lenses which did work, and they have an sph of 0.00. While the CYL (-1.75) and AX (20) are the same for both pairs. Does this make sense, an sph of 0.00 being able to correct my astigmatism? I thought the sph of 0.00 meant not correction…
