What You Do For An Astigmatism?

I want to know what YOU do for contacts/glasses w/ an astigmatism. I have “issues” with my eyes and I wanna know if there is anyone with similar frustrations and what you do about them.
(I’m near sighted with a mild prescription on -1.00&-1.25) I’ve hated my glasses because I can’t use my Peripheral vision, I can see the frame (drives me crazy) and my eyes have an easier/more comfortable time focusing/reading near objects if I remove them
Solution: contacts (obviously) but then although I can “see” that the images are sharper, things don’t come into focus when I look sideways: I get like double vision. AND it’s still hard to focus/read things up close – yet I can’t just pop ‘em off like glasses
My optometrist said all of this is because I am “sensitive” to my eyes. Most people that have the same eyes aren’t “sensitive” and don’t notice it. The focusing part: only suggestion would be Bifocals and I’m in my early 20’s so he said he wouldn’t try and talk me into that. Double vision to the side would be caused by contacts not staying in place due to my astigmatism.
So what to do???!!!

Are you wearing toric contacts that correct astigmatism? Is the prescription you mentioned what you wear in your contacts or is it the prescription for your glasses as well? They might be different.
Did your doctor mention something called convergence insufficiency? That could explain your problems focusing at near. While wearing your contacts try using a pair of reading glasses to read something up close. Use the lowest power you can find, usually a +1.00 but some companies make a +0.75. See if that helps.
if you dont like seeing the frame. have you considdered rimless/drill mounted frames?
find a good lasik surgeon and throw away the glasses and contacts
