Worn Out Retina, A Big Problem?

I went to get glasses today and the doctor told me that I have a part on my retina that is worn out; he explained that this is normal in people with astigmatism. He did warn me that if I ever start seeing white flashes or constant floaters that I should go back to him as soon as possible. He gave me the feeling this was not such a big deal, but I am still scare that I could get a detached retina; he did say that there is a 1% chance of this happening. I am very unlucky and I am scared. Should I be worried? Should I look for another doctor, maybe there is a treatment to prevent the actual detachment or any further worn out of my retina.
Please give me some advice.

I was advised when I was a teenager about a detached retina. I had to do special PE so I wouldn’t get a ball in the face and ‘go blind’! NEVER HAPPENED.
I’m now 44, never had a detached retina.
Don’t be so concerned about it BUT seek medical treatment immediately IF you get the white flashes. You can see an opthamalogist to get offically diagnosed. YOu saw an optometrist.
